Welcome to BCARES and thanks for considering joining the hundreds of Amateur Radio operators that have made the committment to volunteer their time, skills and equipment to provide communication support and public service for our served agencies. Becoming a member of BCARES is a committment, but hopefully this FAQ can help make it easier to get up to speed and figure out where you will fit in with the BCARES team.

Here is what you can do to get involved with BCARES:
  1. Fill out and return the application.
  2. Check in to the weekly net and consider signing up on the member reflector.
  3. Study for and pass the Ecom I test. Check out the Training Pages and the ARES-CO web site for this and other great training links.
  4. Review the offices/jobs list for any matches with your skills
  5. Review the Red Book. The Red Book is our basic training or standard operating procedures manual.
  6. Put together your Go Bag. Check out the ARES-CO web site for this and other great links.
  7. Review the BCARES Training page for upcoming events and other courses and helpful training.
  8. Review the CO ARES Training page for upcoming events and other courses and helpful training.
  9. After your application is approved, order a hat and optionally, a shirt.
  10. After your application is approved, get your photo, badge, and background check. This is coordinated through the Boulder County Sheriffs Office and the Training Officer.
  11. BCARES Board of Director meetings are normally monthly. You are welcome to attend those meetings. Check the home page for coordinates.
  12. Member meetings are held via net weekly and via the list serve described above. There will be an annual meeting once per year, typically in late January. Check the the home page for coordinates.
  13. Callouts and training are typically coordinated via the repeaters. Stay tuned and don't be afraid to check in when you hear traffic.
